Arsenal came from behind to beat Southampton 3-1 at the Emirates on Saturday, climbing to third in the Premier League on 17 points after seven games.
As the table begins to take shape, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal have broken away from the pack, with the Gunners still unbeaten despite facing City, Tottenham and Aston Villa away already this season.
Even battling a number of injuries and two games with red cards, it’s been a strong start for the season, getting points on the board and staying with the front pack through the first two international breaks.
Encouragingly, it still looks like there’s a lot more to come from this Arsenal side.
Gabriel Martinelli has shown signs of picking up form, scoring another goal off the bench against Saints to give Arsenal the lead on Saturday, latching onto Bukayo Saka’s excellent cross with a smart first-time finish.
Having struggled for a few months, the Brazilian looks to have gained some confidence from recent performances, with the biggest difference being his decision-making.
Rather than indecision which has caused his final ball to be wayward at times, Martinelli has been more direct with his decisions, taking strikes first time and being more willing to take on his man, all while keeping up his incredible work rate.
However, it was Saka who once again stole the show, picking up a goal and two assists to build on his electric start to the season.
Saka isn’t always flashy, but there are few players who are as effective at carrying their team, especially when getting doubled and triple-teamed game after game.
Come the end of the season, he’ll be in conversations for player of the season if he keeps this form up.
Kai Havertz also grabbed another goal at the weekend, making it four league goals from seven to start the campaign, and his seventh in seven home games.
While the German international sometimes lacks conviction in his finishing, instead relying on being in the right place at the right time, his equalising strike against Southampton was thumped home.
Now it’s a short break for Arsenal over internationals, minimising the loss of the likes of Martin Odegaard, Ben White and the Gunners' other injured players.
