North London remained red as Arsenal battled to a resolute 1-0 victory against rivals Tottenham on Sunday for their third win on the bounce at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Despite a wave of injuries and suspensions, the Gunners put in a resilient display, picking Spurs apart and taking advantage of their weakness from corners with a Gabriel heading home the winner from a set-piece.
Arsenal has been praised as an elite side at set-pieces for some time now but Sunday highlighted the difference between two teams and two managers when it comes to the Premier League.
Mikel Arteta is obsessed, working with multiple set-piece coaches and placing a huge emphasis on dead-ball situtations, while Ange Postecoglu has failed to address an issue that has plagued his side for over a year.
Gabriel’s header proved the difference, but the Brazilian’s performance was exceptional across the board, defending impressively and heading away every single ball.
William Saliba often gets the plaudits but Arsenal have themselves two top centre-backs whose partnership is the bedrock of their great defensive record.
Arteta was forced into changes in midfield, wit Martin Odegaard injured and Declan Rice suspended, shifting the shape to have Jorginho next to Thomas Partey, with Kai Havertz dropping in behind Leandro Trossard up top.
The shift of system, personnel and also style is something we’ve seen rarely in recent years under Arteta.
He has stuck to his principles and his systems, and the results show he has been right to do so, but Sunday we saw a different side to his management and one that could add another string to Arsenal’s bow.
It’s partly why the board have been so keen to sign the manager up to a new deal, and it’s a huge relief to have Arteta staying around for at least another three years.
The Gunners travel to Italian side Atalanta to kick off their Champions League campaign on Thursday and it’s likely we’ll see a similar system and a similar team to the one that beat Tottenham.
Then it’s off to Manchester City on Sunday evening for a massive clash at the Etihad.
City have seen the pragmatic approach and will be expecting it, so let’s see if Arteta has another trick up his sleeve.
