A new GP super-surgery is to be set-up in Muswell Hill, merging three practices that fail to meet disability and equality laws.
The move, backed by Haringey Council’s cabinet on Tuesday night, will see the new super-surgery at 54 Muswell Hill cater for up to 25,000 patients. It will merge Rutland House Surgery, Queen’s Avenue Surgery and the Muswell Hill Practice.
As well as failing to meet the Disability Discrimination and Equality Acts, according to cabinet reports, the practices are too small for their patient lists. There is also concern over infection control standards. The GPs and Haringey and Islington Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) have spent two years looking at alternative premises.
In 2017 the site was considered as an alternate location for Muswell Hill Library, if it was moved from its home in Queens Avenue.
The council signed a 999 year lease on the property in 2017, which housed the Peter Rigby Trust and the London Centre for Cerebal Palsy.
The CCG will have a 25 year lease, and the super-surgery is aiming to open in late-2019. The building, which is over three floors, has already had plans for six affordable homes to be built on the upper two floors.
The average age of Muswell Hill residents is older than the Haringey and London-wide average.
Cabinet member for Corporate Services and Insourcing, Cllr Noah Tucker told the meeting: “The GPs want to set up there and we support this objective within the overall view of wanting to provide better and more integrated healthcare in the borough.
“There has been current access issues raised with this site. There are current access issues at the existing sites for the GPs. We are seeking to identify and address this.”
