People of all faiths and backgrounds came together for a meeting to plan this year’s Mitzvah Day project across north London to help tackle hunger and food insecurity.
Mitzvah Day was started as a charity in Golders Green by a Jewish woman, Laura Marks, back in 2005. It is now a nationwide movement bringing all faiths together for one day for people to do something good for their communities.
The charity, now working with Camden Food Bank, held the meeting in Camden Town Methodist Church with faith leaders, specialists in the field and those experiencing food poverty.
The aim was to plan for this year’s Mitzvah Day on November 24 and meet the challenges to help those struggling with hunger and to work out solutions.
“We face increasing challenges of food insecurity and social division,” the charity’s chief executive Stuart Diamond said. “So it’s crucial to come together as a community.
“We must address food poverty issues head-on and foster compassion to create a more just society.”
Camden Town Methodist deacon Sally Wheadon said: “Hearing the stories of those experiencing hunger really brought us together in a common calling to challenge injustice and help those in need.”
Delegates at the meeting brought non-perishable foods and toiletries to add to the stock of supplies now being distributed by the food bank.
Volunteers wanting to help out this year are being urged to register online on the mitzvahday.org.uk website.
