At La Sainte Union School in Highgate, we are proud to see so many of our students enthusiastically engage with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Our commitment to fostering a passion for these fields is evident in our diverse programme of enrichment activities, particularly through our highly successful Biorobotics Club. This unique initiative has offered students an exciting pathway to explore science and engineering while addressing real-world environmental issues.
In collaboration with UCL and the Royal Society, our students have embarked on a series of learning experiences. Last year, they began their journey with a workshop at UCL’s Grant Museum of Anatomy, which was followed by a visit to London Zoo.
These events ignited a sense of purpose, as students focused on designing innovative solutions to tackle pressing challenges such as pollution and climate change.
One of the club’s proudest achievements came this past April, when our Year 10 students represented La Sainte Union at UCL East’s Earth Day event, part of the university’s Gaia Public Programme.
The Planet vs Plastics event highlighted creative approaches to combat plastic pollution. Our students showcased their jellyfish-inspired robot, designed to help remove plastic waste from waterways and oceans to a captivated audience of primary school children.
They didn’t stop there; our students led hands-on workshops, guiding the younger pupils in coding and building simple ‘inchworm’ robots using microtechnology.
The learning continued into the summer term as our students worked tirelessly to refine their biorobot prototype, which they proudly presented at UCL’s Festival of Engineering. This gave them the opportunity to connect with other secondary school students, university attendees, and even industry professionals, sharing their innovations and insights.
And the excitement is far from over! This month, the Biorobotics Club will present their project at the upcoming Association for Science and Discovery Centres conference at Carlton House.
As they prepare for this event, they are hard at work ‘paddle-testing’ their robot and practising for a Q&A session that will showcase their dedication and expertise.
La Sainte Union is empowering young women to lead with knowledge, creativity, and confidence in STEM.
