On Thursday, October 17, an election took place at Trevor-Roberts School in Belsize Park.
Tasked with winning over their fellow students with appealing manifestos, the Year 6 students got to work in their Modern Studies lessons.
Every year in the autumn term, the Year 6 students split into teams of three or four and begin planning how they can persuade the school to vote for them in the mock election.
After a few weeks of learning about democracy, canvassing and manifestos, they take to the stage.
Having learnt about speeches, the Government and all sorts of oratorical devices, confidence is high. Every team displays the posters they have written their manifestos on and illustrated. They then present their ideas to the entire school.
After pitching all the manifestos, it is out of their hands.
Each student and teacher is given a polling card to obtain their voting slip. They then have to put a cross in the box of the team they believe is the best.
The next day, after the votes had been counted by some hard working teachers, the results were announced!
The runners up were Planet First, who put the environment at the centre of their policies. Our winners though were EIC (Economy, Immigration, Culture) led by Jojo, Luca and Alex. Their confident, relevant manifesto and proposal to reduce homework gained them the largest share of the vote.
Next year, Year 6 will look to raise the bar even higher and they will be able to draw inspiration from the US and UK elections that happened in July and November 2024.
