Primrose Hill will be closed overnight until next Wednesday after reports of unauthorised fireworks in the early hours of the morning.

The Royal Parks charity, which runs the park, had this week urged people not to bring fireworks or paper lanterns to Primrose Hill over Halloween, Bonfire Night or the New Year.

In a bid to prevent the park from becoming a gathering spot for unauthorised firework parties, which breach its regulations, it warned yesterday the park would close at 10pm on November 5 and at 1am on January 1.

That closure has been extended from 10pm to 6am from today (Friday, November 1) to Wednesday, November 6.

The charity and the Metropolitan Police asked people not to celebrate at Primrose Hill in the run-up to bonfire night and the festive season.

In a new statement issued today, it said: "Further to our recent advisory notice regarding bonfire night and the festive season, The Royal Parks has decided to extend the overnight closure of Primrose Hill following reports of a substantial number of fireworks being let off in the park during the early hours.

"From Friday, November 1 until Wednesday, November 6, Primrose Hill will close every night from 10pm until 6am the following day. This temporary measure follows the same closure pattern as our summer hours, aiming to protect the park’s safe, peaceful environment during this busy time.

"The Royal Parks is working closely with the Metropolitan Police to monitor activity and encourage responsible enjoyment of the park. Visitors are reminded that Primrose Hill is not an approved site for fireworks displays, gatherings or events, and that fireworks and paper lanterns are not allowed in any of the Royal Parks, including Primrose Hill.

"The Royal Parks thanks visitors for their co-operation and understanding as we work to keep the park safe and enjoyable for all."

Primrose Hill will not host any firework displays or events and is not an official viewing area for the Mayor of London’s New Year’s Eve show.

Nick Biddle, park manager for The Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill, said previously: "Primrose Hill isn’t suitable for hosting a display or for people to bring their own fireworks or paper lanterns.

"We ask that people please respect the park and the surrounding area by not organising a gathering on Primrose Hill or letting off your own fireworks or lanterns."
