East London is to get yet another music festival, named after a long-demolished open air swimming pool in one of its parks.
LIDO will take place in June next year, with curated music line-ups across two weekends, and community-driven activities in between.
It's named after Victoria Park's Lido field next to Grove Road - which in turn takes its name from an open air swimming pool demolished in 1990.
The festival will showcase the most up to date music stars who will help programme the accompanying line up of emerging artists.
Headliners have yet to be announced, but for the latest updates music-lovers can sign up for the newsletter at www.lidofestival.co.uk.
The event runs in addition to Victoria Park's long-running All Points East (APE) festival and will also be produced by AEG.
Organisers say that APE contributes more than £45 million annually to the local economy and has funded improvements in the area, including to the park itself.
Like APE, the new festival will work with East London suppliers and employ local staff and the midweek programme will offer free, high-quality arts, culture and wellbeing activities, and a platform for local talent.
An ongoing partnership with East London Arts and Music (ELAM), will offer students hands-on experience in the creative industry including the chance to perform, and take part in festival production - to nurture the headliners of the future.
AEG also pledge that LIDO will be run with sustainability in mind, from how they power the festival to managing waste disposal.
Jim King, CEO of European Festivals at AEG Presents, said: "Taking place at Victoria Park, one of our favourite locations in the heart of London’s creative districts, Lido Festival allows us to push our ambitions further in working with young people within the industry and those who aspire to be.
"Most excitingly, this centres on a new generation of artists, whether they’re headlining or performing for the first time. The vision of supporting the artists’ journey further develops as we program each day directly with the headliner.
"This delivers a show that fans know has the artists’ musical soul embedded throughout. This is one of the most exciting aspects of Lido Festival, knowing that everyone on the bill means something to the headliner.”
Cllr Kamrul Hussain, cabinet member for culture and recreation at Tower Hamlets Council, said: “This new festival, coming to Victoria Park, has the potential to provide more opportunities for residents to benefit from cultural events; boost our local economy through visits to the borough; and generate more income to support council services including the upkeep of our parks and open spaces.
"We look forward to working with AEG, to ensure that community benefits are at the heart of the new festival."
