Unwanted shoes could be given a new life as animals as part of a school art project.

Parliament Hill School is asking people to donate trainers, stilettos, boots and flat shoes, preferably in good condition.

The girls' comprehensive school, in Highgate Road, will transform the shoes for a surrealist art project, with examples including a high-heeled shoe turned into a stretching cat.

Pupils were reported to be "high achieving and happy".

Elizabeth Gater, from the school's art department, said: "As part of the Year 9 Art curriculum students are creating an imaginative, surreal shoe outcome to combine their understanding of the Surrealist movement."

She said the project allows students to experiment with different 3D techniques and use a variety of materials.

She added: "For this we require donations of any old or unwanted shoes which will be transformed into fantastic artworks.

"Students will be modelling their ideas on these, so we would preferably like shoes in good condition."

The school was rated 'outstanding' following a visit from Ofsted inspectors in May.

Shoes can be men's women's and could include trainers stilettos, boots and flats.

People can donate their shoes at the school's reception.
