Plans for student accommodation at former offices next to a live music landmark have been approved.
Camden Council has given the green light to developer Regal London’s plans for 264 new student flats at the former One Housing HQ site in Chalk Farm Road, adjacent to the Roundhouse.
The development will also introduce 30 'affordable' homes and almost 11,000 sq ft of ground floor commercial space.
Regal said the design will “enhance the setting and appreciation” of the Roundhouse.
The four proposed buildings will reach 12 storeys at the highest point and will feature three drum-shaped elements, paying homage to the historical context of the area.
They have been designed in collaboration with architects firm DSDHA, Regal said.
Both students and others living at the 'affordable' homes will have access to a shared residents' garden.
Along with the development, there will be a new public space built, as well as a general widening of the pavement outside, as the developers call the current pedestrian experience “unsatisfactory”.
Regal acquired the sites at 100 and 100a Chalk Farm Road, which it said are currently empty offices, in 2022.
Previous plans reported in September last year showed Regal proposing 267 student flats and 24 'affordable' homes.
Steve Harrington, planning director at Regal, said: "We have worked hard to strike the right chord on this special site next to such an iconic performance venue and are very proud to be able to bring forward proposals that reflect the spirited history of Camden Town.
“As a Camden-based developer, we are particularly excited that our newest purpose built student accommodation project is in our home borough, and we look forward to bringing our proposals to life.”
Construction at the site is likely to begin in late 2024, the developer said.
Deborah Saunt, director of DSDHA, added: "Our approved design for 100 Chalk Farm ensures that the neighbouring Roundhouse and the industrial heritage of the Regent’s Canal Conservation Area will be both celebrated and respected.
"We’re pleased to be providing an enhanced public realm, benefiting the wider community, as part of our proposal."
