Pubs with gardens around Hampstead Heath and Highgate

The weekend is set to get off to a soggy start on Saturday (August 24) but there's always a silver lining and Sunday and Monday should be clear of clouds.

To help you soak up the sun as well as some pints, the Ham & High has rounded up some of the best pub beer gardens east, west and south of Hampstead Heath.

Hampstead

The Spaniards Inn

Built in 1855 by two Spanish brothers, this Grade II-listed pub is close to Hampstead Village and Parliament Hill and has a very popular beer garden

The Freemasons Arms, Downshire Hill

A premium pub, bar, and restaurant with its very own courtyard and beer garden.

They don't take bookings for outside tables, but customers are encouraged to walk in and ask for availability.

The Old Bull and Bush, North End Way

This very famous pub - celebrated in song by music hall star Florrie Forde - reopened last September after a makeover.

First licensed in 1721, a drinking spot for painters Hogarth, Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds and rebuilt with modern extensions in 1923, it was beloved by generations of East Enders. Sadly part of the garden is now a car park, but don't let that deter you.

The Stag, Fleet Road, South End Green

The Stag will be celebrating its 150th anniversary on September 7 but don't wait until then.

The pub is both a celebrity hangout and a great community local, serving British seasonal food and has a secret beer garden. Go check it out.

The Garden Gate, South End Road

With a name like Garden Gate you would hope for some alfresco dining and drinking and you will not be disappointed. 

This pub boasts on its website that it is "one of the finest beer gardens in the whole of the capital".

HIGHGATE

The Flask, Highgate West Hill

The oldest part of this pub dates back to 1663 and the parts of inside are reputed to be haunted.

Outside however, be prepared to book a table as this pub's beer garden gets extremely busy at warm weekends.

The Red Lion & Sun in North Road

This gastro pub has not one, but two beer gardens so find a shady spot and enjoy a drink and meal.

It has a daily changing menu, fine wines and a robust whisky list.

The Woodman, Highgate

Nestled next to Highgate tube station in Archway Road, The Woodman is a family run, traditional pub serving restaurant quality food including Sunday roasts.

A large beer garden sweeps around the side of the pub, catching the late summer sun.

At the bottom of Highgate West Hill the historic Duke is billed as a "muddy boots" pub given its location on the edge of Hampstead Heath.

It has a small terrace, tables around the side of the pub and a little nook with a couple of small tables and chairs. If it's sunny and packed, you can stand outside with everyone else.

The Southampton Arms, Highgate Road

This independent ale and cider house near Hampstead Heath opens at midday every day.

Buy your pint, walk through and there's a lovely little garden at the back that gets very busy any time of year.

The Vine, Highgate Road

This big old pub near Kentish Town is set back from the road with a fairly large front garden, numerous inside rooms and a gastropub menu.
