A man who repeatedly stabbed a woman in front of her young children before fleeing to France has been jailed.

Bodrul Alam, of Orde Hall Street, Bloomsbury, appeared at the Old Bailey on Friday (August 2) a year after being extradited.

The 25-year-old was sentenced to 25 years in prison having been convicted at an earlier hearing in June of attempted murder.

The court heard that police were called to an address in Camden on April 29 2023 to reports that a female had been repeatedly stabbed.

Alam was quickly identified as a suspect and police worked with international partners to identify his whereabouts.

He was arrested near Versailles, France, on July 19 and was returned to the UK on August 3 2023, Scotland Yard said.

Detectives from the Camden and Islington Community Safety Unit (CSU) led the case and supported the victim and her family throughout.

Det Insp Craig Mascall said: “This sentence shows that domestic violence will not be tolerated.

"Bodrul Alam is a dangerous individual and it is right that he will serve a long custodial sentence.

“I commend the bravery of the victim throughout this case and in particular, the courage and actions of her young children that ultimately saved her life.

"This case demonstrates the lengths we will go to bring offenders to justice and protect woman from violence.”

Det Sgt Julian Bates said the victim’s children "were instrumental in saving her life".

"They courageously called for assistance and provided vital care to their mother in the immediate aftermath until help arrived.

"The victim has a long road ahead following this terrible ordeal, but seeing her attacker put behind bars will, I hope, go some small way to helping her in her recovery."
