A new music documentary about a legendary session guitarist, who played and toured with the likes of Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Brian May and Phil Collins, has had its first screening.

An audience of friends and participants gathered in Soho to watch Four Strings Good: A Celebration of the Life and Music of Mo Foster.

Directed by Alan D. Boyd, it combines footage from a sold-out tribute concert to the Belsize Park musician - held last November at 229 Venue in Great Portland Street -  with clips from some of his performances, as well as him in often-hilarious conversation.

The bass guitarist died in July 2023 from liver cancer at the age of 78.

During a five decade career he played on more than 400 albums including Collins' Hello I Must Be Going, Frida from ABBA's Something's Going On, film soundtracks of For Your Eyes OnlyOctopussy, and Revenge Of The Pink Panther, and work by Gerry Rafferty, Brian May, Ringo Starr, Cher, Jose Carreras, Elkie Brooks, Nigel Kennedy, Sheena Easton, Meatloaf and Kenny Rogers.

He also played or toured with Van Morrison, Cliff Richard, Sting, Eric Clapton, Dusty Springfield, and Joan Armatrading, co-wrote songs with Ringo Starr, and once discovered the original recorded version of Handbags and Gladrags by Manfred Mann's Mike D'Abo in his cupboard.

Renowned for his sense of humour, the talented raconteur penned the highly-acclaimed book British Rock Guitar featuring anecdotes and stories about scores of famous British musicians.

Fellow session guitarist Ray Russell, who attended the screening, has said his friend would always "out the groove right in the middle" and "facilitate strong melody lines".

Foster's Belsize Crescent neighbour and friend David Stark is associate producer of the film, which he described as a labour of love.

The drummer and music publisher added: "So many wonderful musicians and vocalists gave up their time for free to make the tribute concert a huge success.

"Names like Judie Tzuke, Jimmy Helms, Leo Sayer (on video), Debbie Bonham, Mo's longtime guitarist pal Ray Russell and others all performed brilliantly on the night.

"Alan Boyd has made a wonderful film celebrating the best of Mo's work in jazz, rock and pop. We are now looking for a distributor and submitting it to various film festivals worldwide."
