North London MPs have been given a number of key roles in the new Labour government.

Labour won a landslide victory in the General Election on July 4, winning 411 seats in Parliament.

Sir Keir Starmer became Prime Minister the next day and announced his cabinet, which met for the first time on Saturday (July 6).

This included roles for Tottenham MP David Lammy, Wes Streeting and Steve Reed.

The government has now appointed ministers to serve under the new Secretaries of State.

As the Ham&High previously reported, Hampstead & Highgate MP Tulip Siddiq, has been made Economic Secretary to the Treasury as well as City Minister.

Sarah Sackman, newly elected MP for Finchley and Golders Green, is the new Solicitor General for England and Wales.

The MP, who has worked as a barrister, said it was a "great privilege" to be appointed.

"I am looking forward to working with the Attorney General, Richard Hermer KC in our joint goal of serving the public.

"We need to restore people’s trust in politics and the rule of law,” she added.

“This role is the next step in my work strengthening the rule of law alongside serving my constituents in Finchley and Golders Green.”

As Solicitor General she will carry out a number of functions in the public interest — such as considering whether to refer unduly lenient sentences to the Court of Appeal — and taking action when there has been a contempt of court.

These functions are carried out independently of the Solicitor General’s role as a Government Minister.

Lord Collins of Highbury has been appointed Government Whip, Deputy Leader of the House of Lords, as well as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

The peer - whose full name is Ray Edward Harry Collins - has been Shadow Deputy Leader of the House of Lords since 2021. He is a life peer and trade unionist who was General Secretary of the Labour Party from 2008 to 2011.
