It might not be by the seaside, but those living in and around Finchley Road can still catch some rays at the beach this summer.
From July 1 to September 1, the JW3 piazza will be transformed into a beach for children to enjoy.
This is not the first year that sand and deckchairs come to Finchley Road, but for the first time ever the beach can be enjoyed come rain or shine.
The open roof over the installation can now be shut within minutes in wet weather, or partially closed to provide shade in a heatwave.
Kosher food pop-ups will provide nourishment for JW3’s beach crowd, including fish & chips, pizza, falafel, bao buns, burgers, hot dogs, Mexican tacos and tortillas, and shawarma.
A selection of cocktails, ice cream and summer drinks will also be available from the bar.
Outdoor screens will show the biggest sporting events of the summer – including UEFA men’s football, the Olympics, the Paralympics and Wimbledon.
Israeli puppet company The Train Theater will be making their UK debut next to the beach for three days next month.
They will perform their award-winning show, Once Upon a World, on July 11, 12 and 14, for a limited run of six performances.
The show is described as a “visually innovative story” of a small, brave and mischievous penguin who travels around the world on his way home to Antarctica.
The two dancers embody different animals, reconnecting the audience to nature and the earth using dance theatre puppetry, music and clowning.
Full details of this year’s summer events can be found at JW3’s website.
