Channel 4 has confirmed the release date for a documentary about a hoax in which parents and teachers in Hampstead were accused of being part of a Satanic paedophile ring.
Accused: The Hampstead Paedophile Hoax is a 90-minute film that shows how a conspiracy theory spread online that a satanic cult was operating from Christ Church and the adjacent Christ Church Primary School in Hampstead.
The false allegations of child abuse came after videos of two young children published online featured baseless claims that they were sexually abused.
The story had been concocted by Abraham Christie, the new boyfriend of the children's mother Ella Draper.
After the videos and claims spread, parents of children at the school received death threats, harassment and abuse – some of which continues today.
Addresses of parents, phone numbers and even the names of their young children were published online along with the claims, as well as a list of names and contact details of innocent teachers, police officers and a priest.
In the documentary, interviews with the parents are recreated with actors lip-syncing to audio of the real parents.
The broadcaster has now confirmed that this will be screened on Monday, March 11 at 9pm.
Channel 4 has released the following information on the programme: “This ambitious film blends real archive footage and interviews, with lip-sync drama to tell a true story about a lie.
“Before QAnon, before Pizzagate, a lurid story about a primary school in Hampstead, North London, galvanized conspiracy theorists around the world.
“Two children accused parents and teachers of leading a paedophilic satanic cult, supposedly headquartered in secret rooms on the school premises.
“The story was a lie. But the allegations plagued the lives of the accused, setting off an eight-year battle for justice that saw screaming demonstrators chasing a priest through Hampstead, a US conspiracy theorist flying to London to visit the school whilst claiming to be armed with a knife and lengthy legal battles that ended with a 74-year-old German pensioner receiving a record sentence for online trolling and harassment.
“Emily Turner’s film explores the real-world impact of an outrageous online conspiracy theory, exploring the importance of truth and the cost of lies.”
