Former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher and acclaimed actor Christopher Eccleston have lent their voices to a charity supporting a north London primary school's vital work.
Gallagher's familiar rasp introduces Highgate Primary School choir's recording of Beatles classic A Little Help from My Friends - a version he describes as 'biblical'.
And Dr Who and Our Friends in the North star Eccleston is the ambassador of Goodstock, a charity initiative set up by twin sisters and music industry executives Katie and Debbie Gwyther to help the school in the face of government cuts.
The school in Storey Road helps many neurodiverse children and, working with Blanche Nevile School for the Deaf and Highgate Family Centre, supports children with autism, ADHD, Down’s syndrome and deafness using music, the arts and sports.
After seeing the difference it made in the community - and also how funding cuts have left it struggling - the sisters set up Goodstock to bring the community together and raise money for the children.
Katie's son and Debbie's nephew attends the school, and the pair drew on their showbusiness contacts to make the message behind the Beatles classic come true.
The children recorded the song at The Church Studios, in Crouch End, which is owned by the multiple Grammy Award winner Paul Epworth, who lists Adele, Florence + The Machine, and London Grammar among his credits.
It was recorded by the drum ‘n’ bass duo turned songwriters and producers Future Cut, who have worked with Lily Allen and Olly Murs, and whose co-founder Tunde Babalola also has a son at the school.
And Liam Gallagher, who also has a nephew at the school, recorded a spoken introduction.
He said: “One of my proudest moments was to be asked to introduce the Highgate Primary School Choir’s version of this Beatles song. They sung their little hearts out and they sound biblical.”
Actor Christopher Eccleston, who has experience of the school's work and of the needs of neurodiverse children after his work on the BBC television drama The A Word and who also lives locally, has become the official ambassador of the project.
The school’s co-head teachers William Dean and Rebecca Lewis said: “At Highgate Primary we pride ourselves on our genuinely inclusive ethos, but inclusion comes with a financial cost.
"With school and SEN funding as it is, maintaining great provision requires creative approaches.
"The opportunity for our children to work with industry professionals at The Church Studios on such an exciting project has been a fantastic experience for everyone involved – and knowing that any money that is raised will support children to get the support they need, makes this project even more special.”
