More street storage spaces for bicycles are being installed to help households who do not have space in their own homes.
Haringey Council plans to double the number of bike ‘hangars’ in Tottenham, Wood Green, Crouch End and Harringay to 2,000 to reduce the waiting list for places to store bikes.
“Getting secure storage for bikes can be a barrier to cycling,” the council’s deputy leader Mike Hakata said.
“There is a significant increase in the number of people cycling since the pandemic. We want to encourage people to travel actively for their health and to reduce car traffic to improve air quality.”
The council has so far installed 1,000 secure on-street storage spaces, with a new programme to increase it to more than 2,000 by the middle of next year.
It is also gearing up to bring in an e-bike hire scheme later this year to help cut traffic pollution and congestion on the roads.
