A police cordon is still in place after the “tragic” stabbing of a 21-year-old man following a reported street fight.
Police were called to reports of a brawl in Tufnell Park Road, Holloway, shortly before 7.30pm yesterday evening (December 11).
A 21-year-old man was found at the scene with stab wounds.
He was rushed to hospital by London Ambulance Service but died in the early hours of this morning (December 12).
Officers arrested a 17-year-old boy nearby on suspicion of murder and he was taken to a north London police station, where he remains.
Reacting to reports of the stabbing, Islington Council leader Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz said she was “shocked and saddened by the tragic news”.
A crime scene remains in place in Tufnell Park Road, where some residents were seen gathering this morning.
A police cordon spans the street close to the junction with Holloway Road.
Officers and police vehicles, including a forensics van, have also been pictured in the road.
Tom, who works at Sarc hairdressers in Holloway Road, told the Islington Gazette: “I heard about it on the news this morning. I work round the corner and couldn't park my car.
“You hear about these incidents a lot, there's a lot of crime in London.”
A member of staff at Kiran News, located close to the cordon, added: “It's senseless, all the violence with kids these days”.
Another shopkeeper, who did not want to be named, said: "Everything is crazy now.
"Holloway Road is like a ghetto, you've got the wrong people running around."
Police say the victim’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz said: “My thoughts and condolences, and those of Islington, are with their family and friends at this extremely difficult time.
“The Metropolitan Police has launched a murder investigation and we’ll be working with them to support and reassure the local community, including by carrying out extra patrols in the area.”
