Emeli Sandé, Eska, and Cerys Matthews are among the stars who will celebrate the songs of Joni Mitchell at The Roundhouse.
Hosted by Matthews, the April 2024 gig - announced on the icon's 80th birthday - is part of the Chalk Farm venue's In The Round series.
Born in Alberta Canada on November 7, 1943, Mitchell is one of the most influential singer songwriters to emerge from the 60s folk scene, and her six decade career has embraced pop and jazz in hits such as Both Sides Now, Big Yellow Taxi, River, and A Case of You.
Now in its seventh year In The Round features intimate gigs by established and emerging artists who are encircled by the audience on the former train shed's stage, with past performers including Ronnie Spector, Patti Smith, Beverly Knight, and Guy Garvey.
The 2024 series features bespoke shows, one-off collaborations and stripped back performances and kicks off on April 18, with a show featuring Emeli Sandé, Kate Stables (This Is The Kit), Vashti Bunyan, Lail Arad, Sam Amidon, and Eska performing Mitchell's songs, with backing from the Roundhouse Vocal Ensemble.
Singer-songwriter Tirzah will headline on Friday,April 19, performing songs from her three albums, Devotion, Colourgrade and the recent, trip9love...??? while English singer songwriter and folk star Vashti Bunyan headlines on Saturday April 20.
The Paraorchestra made up of disabled and non-disabled musicians performs the Death Songbook with Brett Anderson of Suede and conductor Charles Hazlewood on 24 April, featuring delicate new versions of songs about death, love, loss, and transcendence.
Lauded English singer-songwriter Lucy Rose headlines on 25 April following the release of her latest single, “Could You Help Me,” and US artist and musician Lonnie Holley takes to the stage on 26 April to co-headline with sound experimentalist and jazz musician Matana Roberts.
The closing night on April 27 features award-winning US jazz vocalist Samara Joy whose velvety vocals won her Best New Artist at the 2023 Grammy Awards, while her second album, Linger Awhile scooped the Grammy award for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
The Roundhouse's Head of Music, Lucy Wood, said: "In The Round features extraordinary young talents like Samara Joy alongside singular artists like Lonnie Holley and Vashti Bunyan, and this year a special show celebrating one of the greatest songwriters of our time, Joni Mitchell.
"Audiences will have the chance to preview music from Lucy Rose's new Kwes-produced album, and experience unique performances from innovators like Matana Roberts, Tirzah and Paraorchestra up-close in a beautiful space. Musicians from Roundhouse's Resident Artist programme will perform at every show throughout the festival. I'm really excited for audiences to hear the amazing music being produced by the emerging talent from our programmes."
In The Round runs at The Roundhouse from April 18 to 27, 2024. General tickets go on sale at 10am on November 10.
