Haringey Council is negotiating an exit from its contract with its leisure provider as one of its pools is yet to reopen more than seven months after closing.
On July 12, the council announced a review of its leisure provision after repeated issues with its facilities run by Fusion Lifestyle.
These included the ongoing problems at Tottenham Green Pools and Fitness in Philip Lane and the closure of Park Road Pools and Fitness in Crouch End earlier this year.
Internal correspondence shared with this paper suggested that repeated flooding in the plant room of the Tottenham centre forced the initial pool closure, which has now lasted more than seven months.
Fusion also operates Broadwater Farm Fitness Centre in Adams Road, Tottenham.
Haringey Council leader Cllr Peray Ahmet has now said that “the time has come to look for a new way forward for the three centres that Fusion manages”.
She added that the council is currently “seeking to agree a negotiated exit of Fusion from its contract”.
Fusion Lifestyle previously told this paper it was “working closely” with the council on its future options for leisure provision.
The council has said it continues to work with Fusion towards reopening the pools at Tottenham Green.
Cllr Ahmet said yesterday (August 9): “We are keen to find an amicable way forward, and council representatives have met with Fusion this week to explore the timeframe for the transition.
“As a result of this process, we hope to deliver services which are more accountable to residents and where future concerns and maintenance issues are dealt with quickly and efficiently.”
She added: “We have already seen from our experience of bringing New River Sport and Fitness back in-house that exploring alternative models for leisure centre management can help to increase usage and membership of centres, as well as ensuring more inclusive facilities and activities.
“We will update residents on this process every step of the way”.
Fusion Lifestyle has been contacted for comment about the council’s decision.
