A Haringey councillor has said she is “deeply disappointed” by repeated pool closures after a review into leisure services in the borough was announced.
Fusion Lifestyle currently runs the leisure centres at Tottenham Green and Park Road, as well as the community gym at Broadwater Farm.
But the provider has come under fire in recent months after repeated closures at the Park Road site in Crouch End, and the ongoing problems with the pools at Tottenham Green.
Internal correspondence shared with this paper earlier this year suggested that repeated flooding in the plant room of the Tottenham centre in Phillip Lane forced the initial pool closure, which has now lasted more than six months.
Haringey councillor Emily Arkell, cabinet member for culture, communities and leisure said that the authority would consider the recent “immense success” of New River Sport and Fitness in its upcoming review.
This leisure centre was brought back under council control two years ago, with Cllr Arkell claiming that the move increased usage and allowed for greater investment in its services.
The authority has now said that it is “working together” with Fusion Lifestyle on how services at Tottenham Green and Park Road could be delivered in a different way.
Cllr Arkell said: “I know just how important it is for residents to have access to high quality fitness and swimming facilities, and have been deeply disappointed by the ongoing closure of the pools at Tottenham Green and repeated closures at Park Road over the last six months.
“Following this difficult period, we have decided that now is the right time to conduct a review of our leisure provision to ensure that arrangements are in place to provide the best sport, health and leisure services for our residents.
“The immense success of New River Sport and Fitness since it was brought back under council control two years ago shows that there is a different way to manage leisure services.”
She added: “We’ll be taking this experience into account when deciding the best way forward for our future provision of leisure services across Haringey.”
A spokesperson for Fusion Lifestyle said: "We are working closely with our partner Haringey Council to evaluate their current and future options for leisure provision".
