We're looking back at some pubs that have been lost in a vibrant corner of north London.
The Lost Pubs Project archives the decline of the English pub and using pictures and tips from its website www.closedpubs.co.uk, this page shows five pubs in Highgate that closed their doors for one last time in the past.
However, it's not all sad news because there is nothing like community campaigns to resurrect some.
The Rose & Crown
The Rose & Crown, in Highgate High Street, closed in 2012 to be replaced by Pain Quotidien.
The cafe chain has now closed its branch and the Grade II listed building is said to have been taken over by Leeds based Northern Union pubs.
However, the Laine Pub company is also rumoured to be taking it over.
The Ham & High has contacted both breweries for a definitive answer.
The Victoria
The 187-year-old pub, in North Hill, closed in 2017.
The pub, which dates back to 1836, originated as a grocers and beer shop.
It was sold to Icon Bars in 2013 and became a popular live music venue, hosting evenings such as a Kinks Collective attended by local resident Ray Davies.
Since bailiffs slapped a notice on the door the pub has remained locked up and empty.
The Wellington Inn
This pub at 513 Archway Road was closed and demolished in 1988, and replaced with an Esso petrol station known as the Wellington Service Station.
The Winchester Hall Hotel
The Winchester, in Archway Road, closed in 2014 and threatened by three changes of use applications.
When Pat and Val Collins called last orders after 32 years, the Ham&High reported that they had served the likes of Liz Hurley, Amanda Holden, Martin Clunes and Tom Hardy.
However the Northern Union Pub company swooped in and saved the pub which reopened in October 2022.
The White Lion
The White Lion used to stand at 64-66 Highgate High Street.
Now at this address you will find a Costa coffee outlet and a chemist, Bailey & Saunders dispensary.
