Camden's newest microbrewery is serving up craft beers from its canalside tap room.

Located under railway arches at Hawley Wharf, 3 Locks Brewing Company is the latest addition to the area's thriving pub scene.

Paddington-based Marinos Alexandrou founded the 56 Isles brewery on the Greek island of Paros several years ago, and wanted to set up a second venture closer to home.

"I got into brewing in 2015 and started learning a little bit more about beer," he said.

"Then I found this beautiful space by the Regent's Canal, next to the cinema in Hawley Wharf. It seemed to be an area that was crying out for a brewery."Ham & High: There's an upstairs room which overlooks Regent's CanalThere's an upstairs room which overlooks Regent's Canal (Image: Beth Davis)

3 Locks has a brewhouse with tanks, and tap room serving their own Pale Ale from Kent hops, a West Coast IPA, a Czech-inspired lager, a light-drinking porter, a hefeweizen with notes of banana clove and vanilla, and an American style gluten free APA.

An airy upstairs seating area, dubbed the beer hall, overlooks the canal.

"We make all the beers on site to our head brewer's recipes," adds Alexandrou, who has lived in London for 20 years and also owns The Brass Monkey pub in Victoria.

"It's all made in small batches and from brew to consumption it's 15 metres, you can get fresher than that."Ham & High: Marinos Alexandrou in front of the beer tanks at 3 LocksMarinos Alexandrou in front of the beer tanks at 3 Locks (Image: Beth Davis)

He chose a name that "relates to the area".

"There are three locks by the canal at Camden, and the brewery is located in between them. I wanted a name that resonates with the history of Camden."

3 Locks also serves up pizza, snacks and hot dogs to drinkers, and while Alexandrou says it's early days, the micro-brewery has met with approval among locals since opening last winter.

"It's a new venture but it's been very well recieved. Weekends are very busy, and we get regulars who have a passion for craft beer.

"There are well known established brands you can buy everywhere, but there's a real following for quality fresh beer that's brewed with care."
