A charity responsible for two leisure centres currently closed due to “maintenance issues” is facing pressure over refunds and lack of access to swimming pools.

Tottenham Green Pools and Fitness in Phillip Lane has been shut since the start of the year after its electrical supply sustained water damage. It is not yet clear when it will reopen.

Park Road Pools and Fitness in Crouch End has been shut since January 27 after a council inspection “identified maintenance issues”. It is currently scheduled to reopen on February 8.

Both leisure centres are run by charity Fusion, to which Haringey Council outsourced both services in 2012 under a 20-year contract.

Fusion has been providing refunds for Tottenham Green Pools users, but was initially criticised by residents for leaving Park Road Pools members “out of pocket”.

Local MPs David Lammy and Catherine West, who is also chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Swimming in Parliament, have expressed “deep concern” regarding the closure of the two swimming pools.

They said that they feared the closures would hamper efforts “to improve swimming participation among schoolchildren in Haringey”, and urged “closer working” between the council and Fusion.

After the Park Road closure announcement, Cllr Julie Davies, Haringey’s cabinet member for communities and civic life, said: “We have been disappointed with Fusion’s response to this situation and with Fusion’s failure to provide a timetable for…ensuring the pools can be safely used by residents.”

A spokesperson for Fusion said: “We’ve worked very hard to resolve the issues at both centres as quickly as possible and are pleased to say our Park Road Pools will be open from February 8.

“Tottenham Green Leisure Centre remains closed and we can only apologise for the frustration this must be causing. We are working hard with the council and insurers to resolve the water damage to our electrical supply and we are hoping to be able to reopen soon.

“While Tottenham Green Leisure Centre remains closed, we are offering access to any of Fusion's other local centres in the meantime, as well as access to our free online classes.”

They added that if any Fusion users were still concerned about the refund process they should contact info@fusion-lifestyle.com.
