Refuse strewn across the pavement outside a restaurant is blighting the lives of the people who live and work there.

The owner of Persian restaurant Hana, in West End Lane, says he has been battling Camden Council for a decade to provide commercial bins on the roadside outside his premises.

And Alper Kilic, who lives in neighbouring Marlborough Mansions and walks past the spot twice a day, has also appealed to the council for bins.

He said:"I don’t run a business or have any commercial interest in the neighbourhood. All I want is to have a 'reasonably' clean neighbourhood and not to feel ashamed of where I live every morning when I go work."

Mr Kilic said that because there are no allocated bins for the restaurant or the building, when the bags are left on the street after the restaurant closes, the bags are torn apart by foxes in search of food.

In an email to ward councillors Lorna Greenwood and Richard Olszewski, Mr Kilic suggested the council provide two bins, one of which he would be happy to contribute towards.

"We are all aware that Camden, as well as many other London boroughs, have litter problems which need tackling," he wrote.

"But this one is different and much worse than anything I have seen during our past 20 years in north west London."

Restaurant owner Davood Najaflo says that although staff leave refuse outside at the designated collection times, it is not always collected and his staff must clear up.

He said: "We can't keep a bin outside because the kitchen is in the basement so we won't be able to take a bin in and out of the kitchen, that's the problem.

"The health and safety is not good. We're more than happy to have one big one outside, which I believe we have space for.

"At the side of the restaurants in Cannon Hill there is space. There are so many mansions here that already have the big bins outside. Why can't we have it?"

A spokesperson for Camden Council said commercial waste bins must not obstruct the public highway and are required to be kept on a business’s premises

They said: “On West End Lane there are three collections each day between 6am and 8am, 10am and 12pm, and at 10pm.

"If businesses miss the last collection of the day, we recommend that their waste is placed out for the first collection the following day so that waste is not left on the street overnight."

The spokesperson said businesses have a responsibility to manage their waste and recycling, adding "commercial waste bins are available for businesses to hire to help them to meet their duty" but did not outline the cost.

"We will be contacting Hana Restaurant to discuss the waste collection needs of their business and the options available to them,” they added.
