A much-loved annual Christmas display will be scaled back this year - but it will not dampen the area's great festive spirit, organisers say.
Muswell Business traders’ association's annual fundraiser for the Christmas tree lighting ceremony in St James Square is under way once again.
The group is preparing for another year of Christmas cheer with lights, face painting, mulled wine and pop-up shops - but says it still needs to fund Santa’s Grotto, presents, costumes, banners and other expenses.
Despite budget concerns, the square will still have its Christmas tree, which is donated free of charge by Haringey Council's high street and town centre team.
The business group’s figurehead, Deanna Bogdanovic, admitted she was reluctant to ask the public to donate money this year due to the cost of living crisis – but said “there’s not enough money left” without further support.
It is hoped up to £1,500 can be donated this year to keep Christmas alive in Muswell Hill.
The organiser said: “It might not be as big and fabulous as last year, but it will be something along those lines.
“It will be scaled down and what will happen will really depend on how much money is raised.”
She added that the group has never missed out on the annual event, including during pandemic restrictions, so it hopes to continue this year.
