Fireworks and paper lanterns will once again be banned from Primrose Hill in the run-up to Bonfire Night, with the park set to close at 9pm on the evening itself.

A statement from the Royal Parks today confirmed that police will guard all gates in the days before and after November 5, as has been the case since 2013.

It said: “Visitors to Primrose Hill are welcome to enjoy the views and watch the fireworks displays taking place across the capital but the personal use of fireworks and lanterns is prohibited under Park Regulations.”

The park will also close at 1am on New Year’s Eve, with management claiming they have had ever-increasing problems with littering on celebratory evenings after New Year revellers turned Primrose Hill into a “mudslide” strewn with rubbish in 2014.

Mark Bridger, assistant park manager for Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill, said: “The summit of Primrose Hill has wonderful views across London and we welcome anyone who wants to enjoy the park and watch the various firework displays being held across the capital.

“Primrose Hill isn’t suitable for hosting a display or for people to bring their own fireworks. Also, paper lanterns can be dangerous when lit in the dense assembly of visitors causing injury, and damage to the park including surrounding properties.”

A police spokesman said: “I urge members of the public not to bring fireworks to Primrose Hill. This will allow my officers to focus their efforts on ensuring that park visitors remain safe, that the atmosphere remains good natured and that any anti-social behaviour can be dealt with swiftly.”
