A colourful man-about-town has reformed his fringe political party on the back of the Brexit result - which he said is “a step in the right direction” towards abolishing the existing system
“Rainbow” George Weiss - the son of a diamond merchant who became known for standing in multiple seats at each general election - voted to leave the European Union and said he was “delighted” with the result.
He used his 76th birthday party at Cafe Rouge in Hampstead last week to relaunch Captain Rainbow’s Universal Party - but said he has no plans to stand as a candidate in the next general election.
He said: “I’ve relaunched it 32 years after I started it to get behind the creation of a new party, the New European Wonder Party. I still want to see all political parties abolished eventually. I hope I’ll live to see that day.”
Rainbow George said he is equally delighted with a portrait of him, which has been made into a limited edition print by Highgtate artist Beverley Isaacs.
Ms Isaacs, who has known Rainbow George since 1986, presented him with one of the 33 editions of the portrait at his party .
She said: “George is into numerology and this number represents the beginning of the 33rd year of Captain Rainbow’s Universal Party. I was thrilled that he seems so pleased with his signed and numbered print!”
Rainbow George - who stood in 13 constituencies in the 2005 general election - said his birthday party was a “mystical, anti establishment event” attended by 13 fellow activists who he refers to as “mini-stars”.
He said: “On a mystical level, money can’t buy you membership of Captain Rainbow’s Universal Party because everybody is a member anyway, they just might not realise it yet.”
