William (Bill) Cairns

Published on 31/05/2018

William (Bill) Cairns was born 12th February 1922 died peacefully at home with his family 7th May 2018 Bills family wish to thank as he would wish to thank, all those members of the NHS who cared for him with skill and compassion through the long years of his last illness. The District Nurses, who came to every emergency, 24/7, always totally professional always kind, sometimes lugging heavy bags when roads were impassable. The Home Carers, who over the years made him smile, walked through snow to reach him, became part of our family and wept when he died. The Ambulance Service, always overworked but always there for him and in particular the unknown paramedic who performed CPR in the ambulance, restarted his heart and gave him and us another four years of life and finally the magnificent staff of the Whittington Hospital, overworked and underpaid but always totally professional and deeply compassionate. The NHS is the last jewel in this countrys crown. Nye Bevan, who founded it 70 years ago this year said? There will always be an NHS while folks are willing to fight for it? Now is the time to fight.
