As Liam Gallagher embarks on the solo career he said he’d never take on, he spills on being heckled in Hampstead and his new Highgate home

Liam Gallagher’s reputation preceeds him; he needs no introduction. The rock ‘n’ roll star recently opened up to the Evening Standard Magazine about his past life in Hampstead and Highgate, in his usual acerbic style.

The Mancunian is no stranger to north London, having owned properties in Little Venice and Highgate, but it was his Hampstead residence which has caused him to look back in anger most.

Whilst NW3 and N6 currently tie for first position in our postcode wars poll, Gallagher is clear on where he prefers to call home.

Privacy was clearly an issue, and the musician described being heckled by Oasis fans as soon as he opened the door of his home on Hampstead High Street as feeling “like you’re in a bad trip.”

The former Oasis frontman is clearly eager to leave his past in the band he formed with brother and enemy number one, Noel to embark upon a solo career launching in October.

He said being pestered by fans of his old band outside his home made him question: “Am I a f***ing has-been? Is this it?”

The musician is no stranger to drama in Hampstead, once recalling how he threw stones at neighbour Jamie Oliver’s window drunkenly demanding a bacon roll (with it).

He had planned to slide away to Spain in the months that followed two high-profile law cases including a divorce from ex-wife Nicole Appleton and maintenance fees for his daughter Gemma.

However, little by little, things improved for the troubled star. Now loved up with girlfriend Debbie Gwyther, who worked as a manger for his second musical venture Beady Eye, the couple moved to a flat in Highgate in a more secluded spot seemingly surrounded by wonderwalls.

“This penthouse where it’s like 360-degree views over Ally Pally, so it was just pure light. And that helped my head a bit,” he said of the Highgate apartment.

The property portfolio of the singer is half the world away from the Manchester council house he grew up in.

Despite the importance of being idle, Gallagher still has time to walk up on the Heath, and commented that he bumped into his famous neighbour Ricky Gervais who complimented him on Oasis documentary Supersonic, to which Gallagher replied, “I am the f***ing bollocks, get with it!”

Another Hampstead local Harry Styles was also up for discussion, with Gallagher standing by the young singer who tge described as “interesting,” before praising Styles for his ambition and wishing him luck.

North London is clearly home to Gallagher and will live forever in his heart, having said to Q magazine in August:

“I’ve lived in London a long time, but I only really knew Hampstead.”
