In his autobiography, the former Madness lead singer cited the famous “Our House” single, inspired by the Camden Mews property, as the band’s most successful song
A Camden Mews house, previously owned by singer-songwriter Suggs, is currently on the market.
In a music career spanning more than 30 years, Suggs first came to prominence in the late 1970s, famous for his role as the lead singer of Madness.
The band released fifteen singles that entered the Top 10 charts in the United Kingdom, including “My Girl”, “Baggy Trousers” and “Our House”.
Suggs former property is a large mews house conversion situated just off of Camden Square, and was sold by Suggs and bought by its current owners 32 years ago. Originally three separate mews houses, the highly specified 2,767 sq ft property is arranged over two floors.
Accommodation comprises a fully fitted kitchen, a large double reception room, three double bedrooms and three bathrooms. There is also a patio terrace and an internal garage.
Suggs purchased the original one-bedroom mews house aged 20 in 1981, and cites “Our House”, released in 1982 and inspired by the mews property, as the band’s most successful song. In his autobiography, ‘That Close’, Suggs said of the house:
“Finally we arrived at my newly purchased house in Camden Mews. It had been part of the stables for the bigger houses at the back. It was pretty, but tiny. One half of the downstairs was a garage which we were eventually going to convert. The furniture at this point consisted of one jukebox with one record, ‘Cry Me a River’ by Julie London. Which did make our housewarming somewhat limited, as did the fact that my mate who’d been in charge of the bar got fed up halfway through the proceedings and locked all the booze in the bathroom, taking the key with him. The years flew and we had two lovely daughters, Scarlett and Viva. The Karmann Ghia became too small and sadly had to go, as did the mews house.”
As part of his solo career, Suggs also released ‘Camden Town’ in 1995 as homage to his favourite part of London.
Set in the highly sought after location of Camden Mews, just moments from Camden Square, the property is in close reach of both Camden and Kentish Town. The latter provides straightforward access to the City, while a little over a mile away is Kings Cross St Pancras which provides access to the north and Europe via the Eurostar.
