Halifax has become the latest bank to close its branch in Crouch End.

The company's Broadway Parade branch will cease trading on April 27 due to a fall in customers.

In recent times Crouch End has seen the closure of three of its banks and building societies. Nat West closed in 2021 and Santander in 2019 and also the Nationwide.

Crouch End campaigner David Winskill said: "Banks have made it more difficult to engage with bricks and mortar and used it to justify closing branches and people have naturally migrated online.

"People didn't want to do it, they liked the personal service. We are also told to use the Post Office but in Crouch End the queues are so long it's putting further pressure on an already overstretched service."

Catherine West, MP for Horney and Wood Green, said: “This is another blow for customers, local businesses and our Crouch End high street.  Every day across the country we’re seeing banks and Post Offices close their doors, replaced by pay-to-use ATMs, making it harder and more expensive for people to access their own cash.

"It’s disastrous for the millions who still rely on cash for almost every transaction and it comes as banks continue to report ever bigger profits.

"Last year I urged the Financial Conduct Authority to change the rules around bank closures to give a greater voice to the local community and I’ll keep pushing the government to act to defend access to cash."

In its closing branch review, the bank said: "Like many other high street businesses, we’ve seen people using our branches less frequently in recent years as more customers choose to do most of their everyday banking online."

According to Halifax's report, branch transaction changes over the past five years from 2017 have dropped by 70%, with the counter service removed in 2019.

Cash machine transactions between 2017 and 2022 dropped by 38%.

"We’re responding to the way our customers use our branches. We’ll continue to invest in our branch network, but we have to make sure our branches are where customers need and use them most," the report added.

"As a result, we've made the difficult decision to close this branch due to customers using it less often.

"In addition, the majority of customers are also using alternative ways to bank and we have another branch close by."
